1. First-time setup. On any phone, go to the site, scroll to Missing a word?, type your code (the tap code) into the box and tap Send. A page asks for your activation code. Enter it, then choose a 4-digit PIN. That opens Settings. You only do this once.
2. Your code. Your code is 4 digits, each 1 to 4. Tap Generate three times within 2 seconds. The small version line under the word flickers to 4.1 to confirm. You then have 20 seconds. Pause for a second, then tap the code on Generate: each digit is that many quick taps (1 is one tap, 4 is four quick taps) with a pause of about a second between digits. For 1422 tap once, pause, tap four times, pause, tap twice, pause, tap twice. The footer line shows the code as you go, like 14.2_. When it is accepted the line changes to 4.3 (or shows your saved word's cue), and Generate behaves normally.
3. Opening Settings. Once your PIN is set, after entering your code, tap Cookie preferences in the footer, type your 4-digit PIN into the Consent reference box and tap Save preferences.
3b. Saved word. Type a word and position under Performance word in Settings and tap Save. After that, entering your code arms it: the next single word you generate starts the reveal.
4. Position 0: choose the position live. Set a position of 0 (shown as "0 (live)") for your saved word, a quick slot, a pushed word or the default position. The word is held and nothing is forced yet. When the phone logs in (tap code or auto-pair), the whole screen, wherever the page is scrolled, becomes a 3 by 3 grid: block 1 top left, 2 top middle, 3 top right, 4 to 6 the middle row, 7 to 9 the bottom row. One touch on the block for the position you want, 1 to 9, sets it and the next Generate starts the force. The footer line then reads like 3.D: position 3, current letter D. If the word arrives later (a push or a slot), press and hold the version text in the footer line (or under the Generate button) for about a second to open the same grid. Hold block 1 to cancel.
5. Typing a word. Words are no longer typed on the grid. Use Settings (the saved word), a quick slot, Push a word, or the suggestion box at the bottom of the page.
6. Quick slots. Save up to 8 words in Settings, each with a position (0 to 9). While you are armed, press and hold the version text, then hold block 2 to 9 to load slot 1 to 8. A slot with position 0 then asks for the position: tap a block. Tap block 1 three times to close the grid.
7. Performing. Every single word generated has the current letter at your position. Pause for 5 seconds (or the time you chose) on a word and the next word moves on to the next letter. Words generated several at a time stay completely random. When the last letter has been used, the generator goes back to normal.
8. Suggest a word. In the page's suggestion box, type the word and tap Send. When you are logged in or paired, any word is your input and uses the default position from Settings, or add a number such as david 3. On a phone that is not logged in, david 3 works for that page too, but the number is required, because a plain word there is an ordinary suggestion that goes to the review list. Anything used as an input is never saved to the word list. It looks like an ordinary suggestion.
9. Reset. Tap the logo three times quickly to clear everything instantly.
10. If the footer line flashes a dash. The audience's own filters left no word that fits, so that one word was left unforced. Ignore it.
11. Auto-pair (no code at all). On your own phone open randomwordgenerator.co.uk/perform in Safari, sign in with your 4-digit code and PIN, then Share, Add to Home Screen. You can also press and hold Cookie preferences in the footer of the home page to open it. Shortly before you perform, open it (or Settings) and tap Activate now; it stays armed until you tap Stop, and each paired phone unpairs by itself once the word reveal is done. Standard Performance must be On, otherwise tapping in your code does nothing, allow the microphone the first time, and leave the screen on with the page open. When a spectator taps Generate, their phone plays a short ultrasonic chirp carrying a random code, and your phone hears it. When they then tap Generate three times, their phone asks for the performer who heard that code and is loaded with your saved word, with no code to enter. It also tries a network match at the same moment as a backup. On their phone the address in the header changes: the first dot goes (randomwordgenerator co.uk) while it looks, it returns to normal once paired, and if nothing was found after about 60 seconds both dots go (randomwordgenerator co uk). Then the triple tap is still set, so tap the code (for example 3, 2, 1, 2) to pair the normal way, and the dots return when it logs in. Keep your phone near the spectator and out of a pocket, and know that the ring switch, a noisy room or a muffled microphone can stop the chirp. Your phone flashes green when it pairs (and vibrates on Android). For a phone that looks switched off, choose Mode: Black Screen, then tap Go Dark (the microphone must be allowed): the screen goes black, tap it anywhere to start listening, a small green dot appears in both bottom corners when a phone pairs, and a red one if nothing paired in 60 seconds (then tap the code instead, or tap the screen again to retry). Swipe down with two fingers to leave.
12. Push a word from your own phone. In Settings (Auto-pair section) or on /perform, type a word and position (0 to choose the position live on the grid) under Push a word and tap Push. Every phone that is logged in with your code or paired to you picks it up within a couple of seconds, and the next Generate uses it. You can push before anyone has logged in or paired too, and pushing again replaces the word. Clear on phones returns them to normal. Saving Settings replaces any push.
